What Is AI Visibility?

A growing share of people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for a recommendation before they ever open a search engine. AI visibility is simply whether your business shows up — and is actually recommended — when that happens.

The shift from search engines to AI answers

Traditional search returns a list of links and lets the customer decide. An AI answer skips that step — it just tells the customer who to consider. If your business isn't part of that answer, you're not ranked lower. You're not mentioned at all.

How AI visibility differs from SEO

SEO is about ranking well in a list. AI visibility is about being understood well enough, by a language model, to be recommended in a sentence. The two overlap — clear, well-structured content helps both — but ranking #1 on Google doesn't automatically mean an AI model will mention you.

What “invisible” actually looks like

It rarely looks like being outright ignored. More often, a business shows up fine when someone searches its name directly, but disappears entirely on the broader, category-level questions a new customer would actually ask — “best [category] near me,” not the business's own name.

What businesses can do about it

  • Test the actual questions a customer would ask, across multiple AI tools
  • Identify whether the gap is content, structure, or genuine category mismatch
  • Fix what's fixable, rather than guessing at generic best practices
  • Re-check periodically, since AI models and their answers keep changing
