Google Search and AI search tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity both help someone find a business — but the experience, and what gets optimized for, is genuinely different.
How the experience differs for the customer
Google Search returns a ranked list and leaves the comparison to the customer. AI search tools tend to synthesize an answer directly — often naming one or two options rather than ten. That's a much smaller, higher-stakes list to be part of.
Why appearing in one doesn't guarantee the other
A strong Google ranking is built on backlinks, technical SEO, and search-specific signals accumulated over time. An AI model forms its answer from a different mix — how clearly your content answers the actual question being asked, and how it's discussed elsewhere. Strength in one doesn't automatically transfer.
What each actually optimizes for
- Google Search: relevance, authority signals, technical health, and matching search intent
- AI Search: clear, directly-answerable content and consistent, accurate information about the business wherever it appears
Why most businesses need both, not one or the other
Search engines aren't going away, and neither is AI search. Treating them as the same problem with the same fix is the most common mistake — they need to be tested and addressed separately, even though some of the underlying work overlaps.
